Lowe’s Today…..Super-Mall Tomorrow?

The Dunnellon City Council has approved the annexation of land to facilitate the building of a new Lowe’s Home Center just north of the Wal-Mart on Route 41. The main incentive, apparently, is the $40,000 in ad-valorum taxes that the store will contribute to the city coffers.

This is chicken-feed, considering the impact on traffic, police and emergency services that will be required, not to mention the impact on local businesses.

We at Dunnellon Online would like to hear from those concerned citizens and local business owners who will have to compete with a mega-company like Lowe’s. We understand that you may be reluctant to comment, but we will assure your anonymity, should you choose to remain anonymous. We believe that after you have established a business in Dunnellon and taken the risks involved, you should have a say in this outcome.

Wal-Mart, Lowe’s… what’s next, a “Rainbow Mall”, with forty chain stores located on Route 41? You may laugh, but I have seen it happen in New Jersey, California and South Florida. The end result in every case was a blight on the towns, the eradication of local businesses, and a homogenization of what were once small towns with special character, like Dunnellon.

We welcome, and will publish your comments. There is no other outlet that will. Together we can restrict and guide the inevitable development of this little town that we love, and try to preserve the charm of Dunnellon that made us fall in love with her in the first place.

We believe that the City Council has Dunnellon’s best interests at heart. They are good, civic-minded people who dedicate their time to the mundane operational issues we don’t have the time for. We are too busy making a living, raising children, or running businesses to attend City Council meetings. Our intent is to help them with our input, our ideas, and our suggestions.  Whether you live within the city limits, or in the outlying areas, you have a stake in future development, because it will affect your own quality of life.

Many of us are from “somewhere else”, which may imply that we shouldn’t really have a voice. We are “outsiders”.

  We disagree with this assessment.

We are people who chose to live in Dunnellon, and we have a right to help determine her course, and indeed, a duty to do so. You now have a “soap-box” to climb onto. Climb on up!

Update: July 20, 2006

No Lowe's in Dunnellon! The company has pulled out, and we will not have 7000 more cars per day on route 41.

As Martha Stewart used to say..."It's a good thing."
