The King Of Lundellon
Once upon a time, there was a land called Lundellon. The King of Lundellon, Lortay, was
always telling the people all of the good things he had done for them, and how fortunate they were to have a king such as himself. He gathered a kingly court about him, who followed him around and agreed with his every word. His Viceroy, Gant, made sure that the king’s edicts were carried out, no matter how absurd they might be. Only one person, The Silver Knight, ever challenged King Lortay, but he was driven from the court by an angry mob of the king’s followers, but he vowed to return.
One day a wealthy stranger came to Lundellon, and invited the king and his viceroy to lunch. He had a plan to build a great village, within the king’s own land of Lundellon. It would have large, elaborate castles, and luxurious pavilions and docks on the Bowrain River, which ran through the kingdom. Gant had some doubts about the endeavor.
“What will the people say?” he said to the king.
King Lortay eyed him gravely.
“Who cares what the ‘people’ say? Am I not the King?”
Gant looked at the ground.
“Yes, Sire…..but what about The Silver Knight?”
The king was incensed.
“Ye-gads!” he shouted. “That knave?” He cannot harm us, surely!”
The wealthy stranger interjected.
“Your Highness…”
“Yes?”
“This project will greatly increase your coffers,and those of your friends at court.”
“Hmmm…” said the king. “What do you ask of me?”
The stranger smiled.
“All you need do is tell the people that this will be a great thing for the kingdom, as it will increase the tax revenues tenfold. Tell them there will be a chicken in every pot!”
Gant licked his lips.
“Mmmm…..chicken.” he said.
The stranger extended his hand.
“Then it’s a deal then?”
“Deal.” Said King Lortay.
